Artist Biography
Elizabeth Harwood is a British contemporary artist whose paintings explore the relationship between light, atmosphere and the natural landscape.
Working predominantly with seascapes and landscapes, her work is characterised by expressive brushwork, rich textures and a distinctive use of colour. From dramatic skies and turbulent seas to the quiet beauty of open landscapes, her paintings capture the changing moods of the natural world.
Light is central to Elizabeth's work. Its ability to transform a landscape, illuminate the sea or create a particular atmosphere is a constant source of inspiration.
Her paintings have been exhibited at venues across southern England and the Channel Islands, and she has developed a growing portfolio of private commissions, creating works that capture places, memories and landscapes of personal significance to her collectors.
Elizabeth is currently represented by Sea View Art Gallery in Seaview, Isle of Wight, and welcomes enquiries from galleries, art consultants and private collectors.
Artist Statement
I have always been fascinated by light and the extraordinary way it can transform even the most familiar landscape.
The sea is a particular source of inspiration. I love its unpredictability, the movement of the water, the changing skies and the endless variations of colour and atmosphere. A coastline can feel peaceful and contemplative one moment, then dramatic and powerful the next.
When I paint, I am not necessarily trying to reproduce a place exactly as it appears. I am more interested in capturing how it feels — the atmosphere, the movement, the light and the emotion of being there.
I work instinctively, building layers of colour and texture, allowing the painting to develop as I respond to what is happening on the canvas. Often, the most interesting moments emerge when I move away from the original image and allow the painting to find its own direction.
Ultimately, I want my paintings to bring something of that experience into someone's home — a sense of space, atmosphere and, above all, light.
